3 steps to taming the imposter syndrome beast
3 steps to taming the imposter syndrome beast3 steps to taming the imposter syndrome beastJust Google the term Imposter Syndrome and youll find hundreds of TEDTalks, articles, and blogs covering this well-documented, and much-explored human experience. The psychological feeling of being an imposter at work, at home, and even at play are rooted in deeply traumatic experiences like childhood emotional and physical abuse.Heavy things.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAnd yet, despite these seriousmental healthchallenges, Ive seen the same articles advise just talking about the issue, and realizing youre notlage alone, as the cure.Let me be clear you are definitely not alone. But does the realization of not being the only one suffering from imposter syndrome make you feel any better?Knowing others are experiencingdepressiondoes not stop one from feeling depressed. It can help, and seek ing support is important, but it isnt going to magically stop it from happening. Lets explore what this phenomenon actually is and how to actually tame yur inner imposter. To Understand Imposter Syndrome, You First Need to Understand How Our Brains WorkThe documented percentage of individuals who experience imposter syndrome is around 70%, regardless of age, gender, race or occupation. I would hypothesize that the percentage is even higher. Why? Because we all have a disconnect between how we areperceivedby the outside world and how we perceive urselves. This discrepancy is not actually rooted in abuse or neglect, but in brain development. As early as 4 or 5 years old, children begin to notice the way friends, family, and other people view them is different from how they view themselves. This is when ur internal self-concept begins to diverge from our external presentation of self. Our brain, as Anil Seth discusses in his TEDTalk on how our brains perceive reality, is a mass that is tr apped in a dark, enclosed skull. Its only access to the world is through our senses and body. Because of this, our brain is constantly trapped between previous ideas of self and new input which leaves us all feeling a little different on the inside than we do on the outside.Faking It Till You Make It Works If You Let ItAnother root of feeling like an imposter is that our brain copes with learning new identities by faking them until we can incorporate them into our self-concept. Basically, as we grow up, we begin to act like an adult. This is where the term adulting comes from.In high school, we try on different personalities and personas. Through our 20s we explore identities and careers and interests. We settle on some of them like getting married or getting a good job. The problem is that in general these experiences still feel and are perceived by our brain as just that, pretending. If we would rather be home on our couch eating take-out and playing video games, we label the choice to be productive as not genuinely ourselves. This leaves us sitting in meetings saying to ourselves Wow if these people only knew that this morning I had two-week-old pizza for breakfast, they would not be listening to me lecture them about healthy, germ-free livingWe perceive the personas we wear in different social setting to be false fronts, instead of holistic aspects of an integrated self. And since we see them as false, we believe we are imposters. But fake it till you make it is actually a very healthy coping mechanism. When you fake it what youre really saying is Im unsure of my ability but Im going to jump in and try anyway. While this is helpful and gets us to expand our knowledge and learning, the part of us that believes were faking lags behind. How to Tame the Imposter Syndrome Beast Step 1So how do we stop letting this experience rule our daily lives and begin to use it to ouradvantage? First, embrace the idea that everyone in the office, classroom, or war room has multi ple identities. The Congressperson, executive, and teacher all go home and geek out overGame of Thrones. They were rejected by dates, humiliated by teachers and friends in childhood, and probably failed at a few things, too.None of these experiences mean that they are not competent to do their jobs, which means your previous experiences dont mean you are an imposter. As a therapist, I have the unique experience of having knowledge and skill that can help others to be successful, but I also have absolute understanding that I am only able to use those skills minimally myself. This does not change the power of using those skills. I have learned to employ my multiple self-states effectively in different environments and know that they are all part of who I am. My masks are not fake, they are simply different parts of me that inform each other and can be used in appropriate settings.Step 2Stop judging the part of yourself that feels inadequate. It is only one part of you, and it should be there only to keep you humble, not ashamed.Step 3Finally, accept and the fact that the opinions of others are only tools for you to employ in your desire to grow. They are not the ultimate truth. I have suggested the Rule of One-Third to many people and try to live by it. In life, one-third of the people you know will tell you they love everything you do. One third will reject your ideas and actions with judgment and negativity. And one third do not care at all about what youre doing.Embrace the fact that a part of you will always exist that feels 15 years old, even when you are 65. A part of you will always feelinexperienced, even 20 years into asuccessful career. A part of you will always wonder if other people are hiding the same experiences you are behind their masks of competence, because the truth is, they are. This article first appeared on Capitol Standard. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the fi rst seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Disagree Effectively in the Workplace
How to Disagree Effectively in the WorkplaceHow to Disagree Effectively in the WorkplaceDo you know how to disagree- effectively- with your colleagues, bosses, and coworkers? If so, you have an unusual skill, and you practice professional courage that few people in organizations exhibit. The most effective teams and organizations regularly disagree about ideas, goals, strategies, and implementation steps. People inside of organizations are afraid to provoke conflict, and they dont want to get into an argument or disagreement that they cant manage. They fear public humiliation, damaging their professional brand in the eyes of the organization, being proven wrong, and rejection by their colleagues. It means that people who run organizations or departments, teams, or work groups mostly fail to get the best out of the people they hire and employ. Create a Culture that Honors Differences You need to create a culture that honors differences of opinion and varying points of view. People who feel rewarded and recognized for healthy disagreement are likely to disagree again. This environment must also provide safety for the employee who disagrees. It means that managers and meeting leaders need to know how to mediate conflicts. And, employees need to know how to participate effectively in disagreements. How, asks Margaret Heffernan, author and former CEO of five businesses, in her halbstarker Talk, do we get good at conflict? She says that becoming good at conflict allows people to become creative and to solve problems. She asks, how do you begin to have conversations more easily and more often in organizations and make healthy disagreement a norm? In the example she used, a manager became more afraid of the damage that the silence on the management team was causing. He became more afraid of the silence then he was of disagreement. He determined to get better at disagreement, and he changed his approach. With commitment and practice, you can change the dynamics of y our team. 5 Tips on Developing a Culture That Encourages Disagreement Earlier articles have talked about how to create a work culture and environment in which disagreement and conflict will become a healthy norm. They include steps such as Set clear expectations that conflict and disagreement are expected, respected, publicly recognized, and rewarded. If you are the leader of a team or department, examine whether you might be inadvertently discouraging disagreement by your words or actions. If they are incongruent with your stated expectations, you are stifling disagreement.Ask your team to add respectful disagreement to the groups norms.Make aya that executive compensation and other employee bonuses and profit sharing are tied to the success of the company as a whole and not to individual departments. Hire employees who appear to have skills in healthy disagreement and conflict resolution. You want people who can solve problems and problems are rarely solved without disagreement . Disagree With a Colleague While employees disagree in a variety of ways and settings, most frequently disagreement occurs during a meeting- of two employees or many. You can also disagree by email, IM, phone, Skype, and more today. But, disagreements are better in person as is most communication. The professionalism of your approach to disagreement is critical. A colleague who feels listened to, respected, and acknowledged is the outcome of a positive disagreement. When you disagree starting with acknowledging the strengths of your colleagues position, you start out on solid ground.Start out, also, with the points that you and your colleague agree about and build your case for the differences between your areas of agreement. No matter your job or department, when you disagree with a co-worker, you need to step away from your vested interests to understand his. The chances are that he feels as passionately about his approach as you do about yours. When you think about how to dis agree, recognize that you will still work with this coworker every day. A compromise might be the answer. So might acknowledging that there are certain points that you will never agree on, so you may need to agree to disagree. Ask yourself, even if they are important points, are they worth sabotaging an overall solution? Normally- theyre not. A point comes when the organization needs to move forward- even with an imperfect solution. Once you agree on a solution, approach, or action plan, the key to organizational success is that the team or meeting members need to move past their need to disagree and sttze the final decision. It means exertingwhole-hearted commitment to making an effort succeed. Anything else sabotages the success of your organization.

4 ways to finally carve out more time for leisure reading
4 ways to finally carve out more time for leisure reading4 ways to finally carve out more time for leisure readingYou might love reading the news on your commute, but if not, chances are, youve hit a rough patch where youve had no time to read for fun. Heres how to finally make time for leisure reading again.Listen while you workWhether youre in the office or toiling away in a home workspace, you can always pop in some headphones andlisten to audiobooks or podcasts. So if youre someone who is able to get work done while listening to a great story or discussion, this could bea good way to inject your day with written words or dialogue that inspire you. Also be sure to keep tabs on any books or authors you want to check out so that youre more motivated to seek out something fun to read or listen to.But if that doesnt work for you, you could always do this instead Read while on a break from workTake your favorite novel along in your bag or backpack when you leave for work, or bring a tab let to read digital books when you have a free moment. You could always take a little time for a break during the day and read somewhere else other than your desk - whether thats in a conference room, the cafeteria, a local coffee shop or a nearby park.Just be sure to set a timer in case you get lost in your bookEnjoy a story during your commuteTheres no better way to escape other peoples phone calls and conversations than with a book, audiobook or podcast. This can really help lighten the mood when other people are coughing all over youon the train or bus (and you really dont want to get sick) or demonstrating other bad commuter etiquette. So instead of focusing on how annoying - or grumpy - other people can be on your commute, pay attention to the book or podcast.Maybe, just maybe, witnessing rudeness in the morning - like on your commute - doesnt always have to ruin the rest of your day if youre engrossed in a good story or conversation.Read when you get home in the eveningIf you dont live all by yourself, it might be hard to get some alone time to catch up on your reading. So if this is the case, you could always head to a nearby coffee shop or library to decompress with a good story before heading to sleep for the night. But if you have no problem carving out time for a page-turner in the quiet comfort of your own home, read away

7 Big Mistakes to Avoid in Your Next Presentation
7 Big Mistakes to Avoid in Your Next Presentation7 Big Mistakes to Avoid in Your Next Presentation For many people, presenting in front of an audience- or even just a small room filled with trusted coworkers- can be a nightmare scenario. Not only are many of us afraid of public speaking , some of us also dont even know how to give a good presentation. And its all too easy to make a mistake- or 10- in a presentation when fear and inexperience combine. But luckily, the most common presentation mistakes are easy to avoid. We spoke with two experts to find out the mistakes youre most likely to make, and how you can fix them. 1. Youre not engaging the audience. Even if you dont have a fear of public speaking , its not always easy to engage an audience. Sometimes, presenters get caught up in their own heads, explains Emily Murphy, lecturer in business communications at Indiana University Kelley School of Business . They forget there are people out there in the audience - people who want to make a connection with the speaker. An easy way to engage with your audience is to use non-verbal cues, such as making eye contact. Murphy also suggests asking the audience questions throughout your presentation. This last tip packs a double-punch not only are you engaging your audience, but they have added incentive to pay attention to you if they know you may call on them. The quickest way to bore your audience is to read straight from your slides or a computer screen. I have literally seen people with their backs to the audience reading the slide word for word, says marketing and brand consultant Jeff Magnuson . But, the audience can read too, Magnuson reminds us, which means youre not adding any value to your presentation if youre simply reading it. Instead, you should know the material and tell it directly to the audience in a clear and confident way, he instructs. Have a copy of the slides printed out in front of you or have the laptop facing you so you c an glance down to see where you are. Your visual aids- such as PowerPoint slides and other projections- are meant to help the audience. But they are never meant to take away from the focus of the presentation, which is you, reminds Murphy. Thats what you risk when you build a presentation that looks too busy. PowerPoint slides that contain too much writing, or are too busy with graphs, charts, and other visuals, will distract the audience from your words, she says. So, in other words, apply the KISS principle- keep it simple, sweetie- to your presentation slides and art too. 4. You didnt personalize your presentation.Fact No one wants to listen to a dry and data-filled presentation, says Murphy. Even if the topic of your presentation is mostly data, there are still ways to make it interesting and to catch the audiences attention. So be sure to personalize your presentation with stories and examples- and dont be afraid to use humor. Tell a story about yourself or someone else that fi ts into the subject of the presentation, Murphy recommends. The more human you can make the presentation, the better the chances that someone will be listening.Youve heard the saying, practice makes perfect. Yet, Magnuson warns that many people dont practice their presentation before giving it- and thats a big mistake, he says. Every presentation should be rehearsed- unless, of course, someone is asked to present at the last possible moment, says Magnuson. Rehearsing the material allows confidence to build and the presenter will not be hung upon details because he or she will really know what he or she is presenting. Additionally, when someone interrupts- which they definitely will- the presenter can plektrum up where he or she left off without issue. Dont simply memorize.Magnuson admits it sounds hokey, but a smile can quickly put the room at ease and give the presenter confidence. Plus, smiling helps avoid some of mistakes we covered earlier, such as engaging with the audience and not only reading from a screen. Magnuson says that the only time you should avoid smiling during a presentation is if youre delivering bad or somber news. Otherwise, relax and smile, he says. Along with rehearsing, simply practice smiling while you talk. It may feel unnatural but it will go a long way in your presentation.7. You didnt expect the unexpected. Like it or not, something will likely go wrong during your presentation, whether a projector doesnt work, the lights go out, or your laptop wont load the file you need. These issues can be unavoidable, admits Murphy. But the better prepared you are, the more able you are to handle when things go wrong and go with the flow. Someone who panics and appears frazzled when things go wrong can lose credibility. But if you are able to complete the presentation under difficult circumstances, your credibility and presentation will soar.

The 3 most powerful dots in social media
The 3 most powerful dots in social mediaThe 3 most powerful dots in social mediaSo understated, and yet so powerful. These 3 dots play such an incredible role in the way you build your network, develop your brand and customize your content, yet most people I speak with never even clicked on them. Have you? That ends now read below to understand and use unterstellung 3 dots to improve your LinkedIn experience.Every page on LinkedIn has these three simple dots to the right of a profile picture or in the top right corner of a deutsche bundespost. Lets take a moment to review how these dots differ and what options they deliver when you click them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOn Your ProfileYour LinkedIn profile should be a living document that you continuously update throughout your professional career. Your summary, job descriptions, headline and more all can change based on yo ur career progression, partieal brand and career goals. Yet how many times have you made changes and later wished you wouldnt changed certain items? This doesnt have to be an issue Before you make changes, just go to your profile and click those 3 dots next to your picture. They will give you the opportunity to Save to PDF an entire copy of your profile. I saved mine just in case.On Your Connections ProfileThe 3 dots appear on the profile of someone you are connected with and provide several powerful choicesRemove Connection, Report/Block, Unfollow, Request a RecommendationandRecommend. Lets discuss the functionality of each.Remove Connectiondoes exactly that, it breaks the connection between you and this individual. You will no longer binnensee their orginal posts on your feed (unless another connection likes, comments or shares it) and you will not be able to direct message each other. I very rarely Remove Connections.Report/Blockis another powerful took that gives you the power t o report/lager someone that is breaking rules in their usage of the platform. It alerts LinkedIn that something wrong is occuring and gives you the opportunity to block that individual from contacting you. I used this for the first time last week when I received an InMail from very prominent individual that was rife with spelling errors and the profile was not complete. I realized it was a phishing attact and reported/blocked the profile.Unfollowis a great tool for those people that are always complaining their feed is too much like Facebook. When you unfollow someone, the connection remains but you no longer get their posts or articles on your feed (unless another connection likes, shares or comments on it). Unlike Remove Connection, however, Unfollow allows you to stay connected and direct message each other. In fact, your connection should never know that you Unfollowed them.Request Recommendationallows you to ask a connection to officially provide a recommendation for your profi le. Recommendations are great ways to add validity to your profile, as someone else is attesting to your knowledge, skills or abilities.Go ahead and give it a tryQuick tipMessage the person separately with a few words to help get them started on your recommendation. It will significantly increase the probability of you receiving a recommendation that aligns with your professional brand.Dont worry, you get a gelegenheit to review every recommendation before they are added to your profile.Recommendis the way you recommend your connection for certain knowledge, skills or abilities. It is important that you give as well as receive, but be aware that we can see all of your recommendations (both given and received). Use this tool wisely while at the same time making sure that you recognize your connections for their accomplishments. On The Profile Of Someone You Are Not Connected With (Desktop Platform)Have you ever gone to the profile of someone and the only option is InMail or Follow? Wel l, those same 3 dots provide an alternate set of choices. They allow you toInMailor send aConnection Requestto someone with whom you have no other connection. The Connect selection gives you the opportunity just send the standard connection request orwrite a short message (300 characters or less) The InMail gives you much more room (up to 2,000 characters) to write. Use them wisely and be personable or creative if you want them to acceptNoteInMails are only available with the Premium subscription. On The Profile Of Someone You Are Not Connected With (Mobile Platform)The mobile platform differs from the desktop version in that the default connection request is always the automatic LinkedIn version. If you want to send a message along with the connection request, you have to click the 3 dots and Personalize Invite. If you click Connect on the persons profile or hit connect on the 3 dot screen, the standard message will go out.NoteIf you do this by accident, dont freak out. Just send a follow-up InMail with a personal message on how you met or mutual interests. Not only will this improve your chances of a successful connection, youll have a message in your Inbox with valuable details/reminders of how you met.On An Article/Post In Your FeedIve heard it a thousand timesLinkedIn has become too much like Facebook. I dont like all the political comments or unprofessional pictures. Well, those 3 powerful dots allow you to shape what appears on your feed byHide this Post, Unfollow, Report this Post, or Improve my Feed.Use the 3 dots appropriately (like me) and you will not have this issue.NoteI actually had trouble finding an article or post I didnt want on my feed. These yellow fluff balls in France were the closest, but I did not remove them from my feed. No yellow fluff balls were harmed in the writing of this article.Hide This Postdoes exactly that, it removes the post from your feed. Im not 100% sure that it works this way, but it seems to me that my feed becomes more customized with usage of this tool. I tend to think the LinkedIn algorithms are reviewing my clicks and selecting content appropriately. You definitely should be using this tool.Unfollow, as discussed before, allows you to stay connected but stop seeing the posts of the person responsible for this item being on your feed. Just keep in mind that this is not always the original author. To reduce the chance of a mistakenly unfollowing a connection, the Unfollow button has the first name of the person this action will apply to.Report this Postis for exactly that, reporting inappropriate content.Improve My Feedis another great, yet underutilized tool. Click this option you will get a whole list of recommended sources to follow and get great information on your feed.On Your NotificationsI am active on LinkedIn and my posts get a decent number of clicks and likes. Ive have a few, however, that have gone over a thousand likes or comments. Take this post, for example. In just 5 days my post r eceived 316,000 views, 1,773 likes and 86 comments. This means my phone was getting blown up with updates from LinkedIn almost every minute (which was neat for the first few hours or so). I wish Id known about the 3 dots back then, but here is what they offerOn your notification page, the 3 dots allow you toMute, Unfollow or Turn Offcertain notifications.Muteis the tool I should have used for the post with over 316k views, as it would have stopped notifying me every time someone liked or commented on it. I would just have had to check the post occasionally in order to reply to peoples comments.Unfollowallows you to stop seeing that individuals updates. The people who change the world are masters of this underrated virtue
The people who change the world are masters of this underrated virtueThe people who change the world are masters of this underrated virtueWhen Mark Miodownik welches a young man in 1985, he was stabbed with a razor by a mugger in the London tube.As he later filled out paperwork at the police station, he couldnt help staring at the razor blade on the policemans desk, and couldnt help noticing that it was made out of the same materie as the staple on the form he was signing. When he went home and ate dinner, he couldnt help noticing that the spoon in his mouth was made from the same stuff as well.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHe asked, Why? Why can this stuff be so dangerous and yet benign? Why doesnt it taste like anything? And why doesnt the average person know anything about where it comes from?Miodowniks ability to obsess over tiny details, like the composition of the razor bla de that cut him, led him to become a renowned materials scientist and develop things like newjet engine alloys. He is what literary great Saul Bellow (and a host of psychologists and pundits after him) called a first-class noticer.Someone with a Holmesian ability to consciously observe details that others let pass by.And though its clich to point out that details often make the difference, in a geschftliches miteinander climate as hypercompetitive as urs, it doesnt hurt to remind ourselves how easy it is to underinvest in the small, but crucial.DFW put it wellwhen he saidThe most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about. Stated as an English sentence, of course, this is just a banal platitude?- ?but the fact is that, in the day-to-day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have life-or-death importance. When experts talk about first-class noticing, theyre talking about learning by observation, rather than instruc tion. As I write about inthis postabout Ben Franklins neurotic method for improving his writing, first-class noticers have historically experienced huge acceleration in skill mastery and industry conquest. As Ive been studying people who study details, I have found that great noticers are often systematic about making everyday observations more profitable. Here are a few ways they do itExpand YourFocusOne of the most interesting interviews Ive ever conducted was with a man named James Tanabe. When you hear Tanabes list of skills, he sounds like a savant business, badminton, guitar, theater, gymnastics, comedy writing, flute, etc.But his simple secret is he learns quickly hes really good at shining his mental punktlicht on non-obvious things that help his training. For example, when Tanabe was training to become a circus performer, he would spend hours practicing one-armed kralle balancing. This skill, he explained to me, normally takes about a year to master (to be able to balance for l ong periods without struggle). While his classmates repeated their hand balancing exercises over and over, James paid attention to what the expert balancers didI would notice that the people who really excelled tended to have an extremely calm disposition and almost seem to be somewhere else, Tanabe said. It was a meditative state, whereas the people who never really seemed to progress always had this kind of anxious energy, and they were treating it like it was a strength. Therein was the keyWhile novice students struggled to fight gravity, Tanabe observed the tiny differences between them and those whod mastered the skill.Learning a one-armed handstand has nothing to do with supporting your weight or balancing on your hand, he concluded. It is about finding body alignment and breathing.Tanabe imitated these experts and ended up mastering his hand balancing in less than half the time of his peers. The difference was that he expanded his focus beyond just the obvious, muscular skill of the activity he studied and noticed the tiny details that master hand balancers didoutsideof the main activity. He observed how they lived and breathed, not just how they balanced.Question The IncongruentMax Bazerman, in his bookThe Power of leidicing, points out that we humans are very good at ignoring important details that would make our lives inconvenient.Often this is more than rebellious teenager syndrome its subconscious.Madoff would have been caught many years earlier if those who should have noticed had acted on what they saw, Bazerman points out in a recent interview withFortune. But, too often, people do not see information that would cause short-term negative effects.Werehard-wired to be credulous. Thatswhy stories are so powerful, but its alsowhy skepticism is so important. The simple habit that can prevent us from being duped by Ponzi schemes and our own subconscious biases? Asking more (and better) questions?- ?especially about new or incongruent information. In his book, Bazerman tells the story of the time he and his wife and friends arrived at the Manchester airport and planned to take a taxi to the train station, and the train to London. He noticed a group of taxi drivers at the airport huddled together conversing. When Bazerman approached, a cabbie informed him that the trains were on strike, and offered to drive them all the way to London for 300 pounds.Bazermans companions prepared to accept the financial hit. But Bazerman was suspicious, so he ran back into the airport and asked the information booth if there was indeed a train strike. There was not.The cabbies were running a scam. That simple question saved Bazermans group a lot of money. The positive side of this coin is that those who notice the counter-intuitive are often able to seize an advantage. Entrepreneurs in every industry and era have noticed peculiarities and incongruences in markets and built businesses because they asked the questions that others didnt bother to follow up on .Notice Whats NotThereIn Sir Arthur Conan DoylesSilver Blaze, detective Sherlock Holmes unravels the mystery of horse-race sabotage and murder plot by noticing what other investigators did not what didnt happen. The victim, a horse trainer named John Straker, was found dead with a head wound in the stables, holding a bookies cravat, near the location of some recently injured sheep.Holmes noticed that nobody had heard the stable dog bark the night of the murder?- ?when allegedly the bookie had snuck in and murdered the man. Holmes determined from this that the dog must have known the late-night visitor well, which led him to discover that Straker had snuck in to sabotage a horse that was due to race and had been practicing by cutting sheep. In our work, simply asking the question, Whats missing? can help us focus our searchlights on crucial information.Noticing that the woods are quiet, or that someone who should be upset is not, etc., is a useful habit.Catalogue TheDetailsAs Iblogged a while ago about Ben Franklin, the painstaking deconstruction and reconstruction of master craftspeoples work can help us accelerate our learning.Indeed, it seems that the act of not just observing, but writing down all observations big and small, often leads to aha moments and the mastery of difference-making details.Ive become known among some of my friends for my neurotic spreadsheets. When Im working on a problem, or improving a skill, or writing a story, Ive made a habit of dumping qualitative observations of experts work into Excel columns and sifting and ranking them. This process of forced categorization helps me get beyond the obvious and pay attention to the little things that I might otherwise overlook. Ive used it to write better speeches, analyze book marketing campaigns, and so on.For example The other day, when I was concerned about some weird faces Id made in the photo line at a recent event, I made a neurotic spreadsheet of people who seemed to always look great in photos, and catalogued how they posed in their pictures, from eyebrows to head tilt to what they do with the corners of their mouths as theyre photographed umpteen times.(For the record, Ian Somerhalder has thisdown.)Its a frivolous example, but as much as nobody likes an accidental snaggletooth in a photo?- ?or a razor wound in the back?- ?Im convinced that its the habit that matters more than anything.Noticing the little things in life can help us conquer the big ones.If you liked this post, youll love my new book,Dream Teams. Why not say thank you by pre-ordering a copy???Ill send youthis giant pile of free extrasif you doShane Snow is the bestselling author of Dream Teams and a global keynote speaker on innovation, teamwork, and human behavior. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivi tyThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

US Military Basic Training Attrition
US Military Basic Training Attrition US Military Basic Training Attrition Every year, theres a small percentage of U.S. military recruits who dont progress past basic training, otherwise known as boot camp. In many ways, this is probably for the best; for those who cant complete boot camp, a career in the military is likely going to be a poor fit. Better to learn this early on. All branches of the service report a variety of reasons for recruits dropping out of boot camp. Some recruits arent able to complete basic training for medical reasons, and some cant get past the endurance tests that require demonstrations of physical strength. Others arent able to handle the mental demands of boot camp. This is why its important to disclose any mental or physical illness before enlisting because the chances that it will be discovered or revealed during boot camp are pretty high. Across Branches of the Military The branch with the lowest basic training attrition rate, according to figures from the Department of Defense, is the Air Force, which only sees between 7 and 8 percent of its recruits drop out after boot camp. The Navy, Army, and Marines have recruits drop out at roughly the same rate as each other, between 11 and 14 percent annually. Contrary to what many think, the goal of officers in basic training isnt just to push recruits to drop out. It costs the Department of Defense time and resources to recruit and train new personnel, so officials watch attrition rates carefully, to determine whether any changes or updates to basic training procedures need to be made. A higher-than-average attrition rate may signal something is not working. How to Prepare for Basic Training Barring a physical or mental impairment, would-be recruits can try to get in condition before they enlist, so when they get to boot camp theyre at least somewhat prepared. Learn what the physical requirements are for the branch of service you want to join, and try to get in shape. Be warned that even if youre in top physical condition, boot camp training is rigorous and difficult beyond most recruits expectations. Seeking a Discharge Recruits who decide early on in the boot camp experience that the military is not for them are best-advised to seek a discharge known as an entry-level separation (ELS). Theres no guarantee that a recruit seeking an ELS will receive one, but its worth a shot for those who are really sure. And for those who want to try to game the system, be warned: Youre not likely to get out of boot camp just because you fail a given part of your physical endurance tests. The non-medical recycle rate, meaning those recruits who get more time in basic training, is about the same as the dropout rate. The worst option for someone trying to get out of boot camp is going AWOL, meaning absent without leave. Once youve signed your recruitment contract, youre legally bound to the military. A recruit simply walking away from the military is considered desertion, which carries a criminal penalty.

The worst career advice, according to 6 life coaches

Youâre likely to get an earful of trite sayings, blanket, sweeping statements and outdated, traditional work tactics that wonât serve you well if youâre trying to advance. 6 Paths to the Automated Construction Site
6 Paths to the Automated Construction Site 6 Paths to the Automated Construction Site 6 Paths to the Automated Construction Site The construction site hasnt changed much over the years. Humans in hard hats still scurry across scaffolding, lay rebar, and pour concrete. While automation has transformed the world of manufacturing, construction remains relatively untouched by self-sufficient machines. That is about to change. Artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and robotics are poised to bring automation to building construction. Here we examine six technologies likely to be found on the construction site of tomorrow. The mesh mold wall is built using the in situ Fabricator. Image: NCCR Digital Fabrication 1) Mesh Maker ETH Zurichs in situ Fabricator will soon be laying down bar for Dübendorfs NEST (Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technologies). The building is meant to be a primarily digitally produced structure. To that end, the Fabricator, a robotic arm on caterpillar tracks, will be constructing a double layer of metal bars. This mesh framework will subsequently be filled with concrete. The free roaming robot, using the Mesh Mold technology, as they call it, can create a framework that bends and waves, allowing NEST architects to design non rectilinear walls. 2) Brick Layer Not all walls are concrete, of course. The traditional brick wall is built brick by brick, each one put in place by human hands. But a typical bricklayer can only place something like 500 in a day. Construction Robotics Semi-Automated Mason, or SAM, can put down 6,000 perday, with mortar. SAM wont eliminate all human workers, though. Theyre still needed to tidy up the mortar and load SAM. But the heavy lifting will be done by the machine, saving a few backs and a few bucks as it raises brick walls faster than ever. Artists rendering of the first 3D-printed home designed in accordance with strict European building codes. Image: 3D Printhuset 3) 3D Printing, Gantry Style 3D printing has been building walls a layer at a time for a few years now. In some cases, like the structures from Chinas WinSun, those walls are built in sections and trucked to a site where they are assembled. Other systems do their printing on site. Copenhagens BOD building (for Building On Demand) will be made this year with a gantry printer capable of putting down layers of concrete 50 to 70 millimeters thick at 2.5 meters perminute. The concrete it will use is mostly made from sand and recycled tiles. One of the pioneering companies for 3D printing in construction, Contour Crafting, will also have a system for sale to construction companies later this year. 4) Drone Builds 3D printed buildings are limited by the gantryor the robotic armthat prints them. Not only are they constrained by the physical size of a printer, a large site cant really use more than one at a time, as they get in each others way. So instead of one giant autonomous builder, why not use hundreds, or thousands, of tiny ones? A swarm of robots could be capable of working together on a building of unlimited size, without colliding. Harvard researchers have created brick-laying termite bots, for instance. But the most untethered of robots is the drone. Researchers at ETH Zurich managed to use a few quadcopters, working in harmony, to build a rope bridge. If we can solve the small issue of power, drones could bring any material to any point in space for any kind of building. A new platform uses machine learning to help gather, find and use industrial photos and videos. Image: Smartvid.io 5) Artificial Intelligence No 3D printer, drone, or robotic arm will be of much use without quality software. For robots to successfully take over the construction site, theyll need good intelligence, of the artificial kind. With AI, constructor bots will know where they and each other are at all times. Theyll also learn as they go. Deep learning is already being put to use on human dominated construction sites. The folks at Smartvid.io have used the millions of photos and videos taken of construction sites to teach their program what unsafe conditions looks like. Anyone on a construction site can take a picture of a portion of that site and have Smartvid.ioidentify potentially unsafe areas. Similar technology could one day guide robots to fix errors theyve made, or at least to flag a human when they see something dangerous. 6) Foam Spewing Arm MITs Media Lab has used an existing industrial robotic arm to create the Digital Construction Platform. Untethered by a gantry, it has the ability to travel anywhere at a given site, constructing as it goes. This year the researchers used the DCP to create a 12-foot high, 50-foot diameter dome out of foam insulation. The process took only fourteenhours. The foam of that structure, or of any similarly constructed building, could easily be fitted with rebar and filled with concrete. Unlike direct extrusion of concrete, with print and placeyou are not changing how the structural elements of the wall are assembled, says Julian Leland, a mechanical engineer who worked on the project. You could 3D print a formwork that looks exactly like conventional insulated concrete formwork. As long as the rebar structure and the concrete mix, and the way you poured it and treated it after, as long as that meets building code, we have reason to believe that the structure would meet building codes, at least in the US. Though some of this technology has a long way to go before it becomes a reality, much of it is practically ready to go. The primary reason we dont see robots erecting buildings is the industrys resistance to change. The construction industry has a well-developed model of how to build buildings, how much those buildings are going to cost, what labor is required, et cetera Leland says. They dont want to tinker with that. To get their technology working on actual buildings, it might be better for researchers to approach architects, who are more eager to turn to the cutting edge. But however we get there, its undeniable that there is a time coming when buildings will practically raise themselves. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion

9 alternative retirement plans for poor planners
9 alternative retirement plans for poor planners 9 alternative retirement plans for poor planners By age 35 you should have saved twice your salary in a retirement account. Now some of you might be asking, what is a retirement account? Weâre not sure either.Letâs face it: itâs expensive to be alive and way too expensive to save. Trying to plan ahead for the inevitable day when youâre too feeble to work can be impossible.Never fear! Here are 9 alternative retirement options that donât involve any savings.1. Start a communeStart a commune for other seniors who have no money. Itâs so much cheaper to pack 15 WalMart greeters into a 3-bedroom ranch than it is to live by yourself. Plus, as the leader of the commune, you can charge a small monthly stipend from each resident, that way you donât have to get a part-time job. Itâs good to be queen!2. Become a Guinea Pig for scienceMedical trials need participants to test poorly researched medication for a myriad of human disease and theyâre willing to pay up. Lucky for you theyâre perpetually advertising on daytime TV. S ure, thereâs a chance of horrendous side effects (like death) but who wants to live in a world without money?3. Become a nunThe Catholic Church is in short supply of sisters these days which is an outstanding opportunity not to be homeless. Nuns get free housing, free food and a lot of free time pretending to pray. Are you a man? Donât worry no one is going to notice under that bad habit.4. Steal your grandchildrenâs identitiesChances are theyâre too young to realize someone has defaulted on a townhouse in their name or racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card debt. The best way not to get caught is to take out as many cash advances as you can as quickly as possible. Then head for Mexico.5. Move into the abandoned periodicals section of your local libraryWith all of the worldâs knowledge at our fingertips via the interwebs, the once mighty periodical section of the library is less visited than the local mall. No one will notice your camping stove and sleep ing bag next to that microfiche reader when most of us arenât even sure what a microfiche reader is. Bonus, the endless supply of ancient Time Magazines makes lovely kindling.6. Pretend youâre visiting friends at a nursing home by day, sleep in a utility closet by nightThe nursing home staff and residents will appreciate your kindness and dedication for visiting so regularly; they wonât even notice youâre stealing leftovers and catching naps in vacant beds before you retire to your cozy new home next to the water heater.7. Convince a wealthy family that youâre the new butlerPut on your Sunday best and find the nearest estate; when you arrive knock on the door and let them know the âagencyâ sent you. Rich people have agencies for everything, and they wonât question you. Once inside all youâll have to do is speak with a British accent, open doors and ring a bell for dinner.8. Make like a tree and move into the local botanical gardenHead on down to WalMart for the fin est head to toe camo ensemble. Now fill that ensemble with leafy branches, climb into the most densely forested part of the greenhouse and stand there all day for the rest of your life. You can eat out of the gift shop/cafe at night. Be sure to keep your mouth open when the sprinklers come on, so you donât get dehydrated.9. Turn to a life of crimeI recommend starting out as a bank robber. Once youâve ridden that wave of crime sprees into prison, youâll be treated to three square meals, a bed and the best healthcare tax money can buy. Not to mention youâll be in the best shape of your life from working out in the yard with all your new friends. Youâll also have plenty of free time to read, do crossword puzzles and heck youâve always talked about going back to school to finally get that degree in fine art â" nowâs your chance. There are so many wonderful alternatives to saving and investing your whole life. Donât let society dictate your retirement goals. Put that seve nth trip to Cancun on your credit card. Buy those trendy designer fur pants. Donât let the siren song of moving into 55+ housing in thirty years kill your dreams today. This satire piece originally appeared on Cooper Review.

Do you want to be right more often Then try this
Do you want to be right more often Then try this Do you want to be right more often Then try this An experimenter walks into a room and gives you these three numbers.2, 4, 6.She tells you that the numbers follow a simple rule, and your job is to discover the rule by proposing different strings of three numbers. The experimenter will then tell you whether the strings you propose conform to the rule. You get as many tries as you want, and thereâs no time limit.Give it a shot: What do you think the rule is?For most participants, the experiment went in one of two ways.Participant A said â4, 6, 8.â The experimenter replied, âFollows the rule.â The participant then said, â6, 8, 10.â âAlso follows the rule,â said the experimenter. After several more strings of numbers were met with nods of approval, Participant A declared that the rule is âincreasing intervals of two.âParticipant B opened with â3, 6, 9.â The experimenter replied, âFollows the rule.â The participant then said, â4, 8, 12.â âAlso follows the rule,â said the experimenter. After Particip ant B produced several more strings of numbers that conformed to the rule, he declared that the rule is âmultiples of the first number.âMuch to their astonishment, both participants had it wrong. The rule, it turns out, was ânumbers in increasing order.â The strings of numbers that both Participant A and B provided conformed to the rule, but the rule was different than the one they had in mind.If you didnât get the rule right, youâre in good company: Only about one in five people in the study could identify the rule on their first attempt. (Hereâs a video of an informal version of the experiment).Whatâs the secret to solving the puzzle? What set apart the successful participants from the unsuccessful ones? The unsuccessful participants believed they found the rule early on and proposed strings of numbers that confirmed their belief. If they thought the rule was âincreasing intervals of two,â they generated strings like 8-10-12 or 20-22-24. As the experimenter vali dated each new string, the participants grew increasingly more confident in their initial brilliant hunch and assumed that they were on the right track. They were too busy trying to find numbers that conformed to what they thought was the right rule, rather than discovering the rule itself. The successful participants took the exact opposite tack. Instead of trying to prove themselves right by generating strings that confirmed their hypothesis, they tried to falsify it. For example, if they thought the rule was âincreasing intervals of two,â they would say â3, 2, 1.â That string doesnât follow the rule. They might then say, â2, 4, 10.â That string follows the experimenterâs rule, but doesnât follow what most participants assumed was the right rule. The numbers game, as you may have guessed, is a microcosm for life. Our instinct in our personal and professional lives is to prove ourselves right. Every âyesâ makes us feel good. Every âyesâ makes us stick to wha t we think we know. Every âyesâ gets us a gold star and a hit of dopamine. But every ânoâ brings us one step closer to the truth. The point of proving ourselves wrong isnât to feel good. Itâs to make sure that your business doesnât fall apart or that your health doesnât break down. Each time we validate what we think we know, we narrow our vision and ignore alternative possibilities- in the same way that each nod of approval from the experimenter led participants to fixate on the wrong hypothesis. The numbers study is from a real experiment conducted by the cognitive psychologist Peter Cathcart Wason, who coined the term confirmation bias. The bias refers to the human tendency to undervalue evidence that contradicts our beliefs and overvalue evidence that confirms them.Ideological lock-in happens without our awareness. As a result, we must move beyond mere platitudes like Iâm open to proving myself wrong. We must deliberately expose ourselves to this discomfort and actively work to prove ourselves wrong. When our focus shifts from proving ourselves right to proving ourselves wrong, we seek different inputs, we combat deeply-entrenched biases, and we open ourselves up to competing facts and arguments.âI donât like that man,â Abraham Lincoln once said, âI must get to know him better.â The same approach should apply to opposing ideas.Years after he published his numbers study, Wason was stopped on the street by Imre Lakatos, a philosopher of science at the London School of Economics. âWeâve read everything you have written,â Lakatos told Wason, âand we disagree with all of it.âHe added, âDo come and give us a seminar.âOzan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author. How Recruiters Are Leveraging Facebook And How You Can, Too
How Recruiters Are Leveraging Facebook â" And How You Can, Too How Recruiters Are Leveraging Facebook - And How You Can, Too Many people think of Facebook as a purely social network where people go to post pictures of their cat, share recipes or vent about their political frustrations. However, many recruiters, hiring decision makers and influencers actively use Facebook not only to keep in touch with their friends, but also to enhance their recruiting productivity and performance. Put another way, they use Facebook to recruit people for jobs. And job seekers should take heed. Not only might you present yourself as a potential candidate to recruiters , but you also can add value to your network by referring qualified friends to fulfill recruiter needs. Shelly Goldman , National Sales & IT Executive Recruiter, Goldman Group Advantage, uses Facebook as a companion tool to Linkedin. She explains that recruiters âpost information in our Timeline and evangelize our positions on Facebook. This can be very helpful, not just when the candidate who matches the talent we seek sees the post, but also when others see our posting, and then refer potential candidates. Facebook also helps a recruiter project their brand and the types of people we recruit for.â Rob Dromgoole , Senior Technical Recruiter at T-Mobile, says he would like to use Facebook for recruiting field techs and switch techs (and other blue-collar roles), because they are active on Facebook, more so than other social networks. Facebook networkâs multifaceted layers include both public and private groups that recruiters leverage to their advantage. Both active and passive job seekers can position themselves strategically through these groups. Explains Goldman, âSpecific Facebook communities can be a useful place to find specific types of candidates who are experienced in the type of position I recruit for. They also can be useful to locate people who may be willing to act as a referral source to other candidates, who may be the right fit for specific types of search engagements.â To find particular groups to join, Miriam Salpeter , Social Media Strategist & Owner, Keppie Consulting / Keppie Careers, offers the following guidance, âUse the search tool bar and type in {group, your industry or field and your location if you wish}.â In addition to being available to recruiter searches through these venues, job seekers can use groups to âshare and get information about jobs and details related to your field,â adds Salpeter. Facebook also is a venue through which active and passive job seekers can become a magnet for opportunity by continuously marketing your own value. âDonât underestimate the potential to connect with a job opportunity via Facebook,â encourages Salpeter. âSince most people are closely connected with their Facebook network, itâs a great place to share information and updates demonstrating expertise. These updates can subtly convince members of your network that youâre an industry expert.â In addition to professional expertise, the personal information you post, if high quality, can encourage a positive feeling about your candidacy. Goldman echoes this advice, while also providing a cautionary tip, âItâs important to project a positive professional and personal overall brand and image. We all need to remember, once something (photo, video, article or comment, etc.) is posted online, even when taken down/deleted, nothing ever completely goes away. Everything is somewhere online in perpetuity.â To help see what recruiters outside your network are seeing, Salpeter suggests clicking on the three dots on the far right side of your profile and select âView Asâ to see what your profile looks like to the public. Keep in mind, recruiters have access to your Facebook activities. Goldman shared the following example, âBased on the type and level of Applicant Tracking System (ATS) a recruiter is using, we can see a level of candidate activity on various digital/social platforms. Facebook is one of the places we can find potential candidates and get a greater sense of the candidate.â Moreover, to increase your chances of being found by recruiters on Facebook, especially for passive job seekers, Salpeter offers the following tips: Finally, bear in mind that job seekers also have an advantage in being able to draw toward or winnow out recruiters based on what a recruiterâs Facebook page looks like. âActive and passive job seekers can ⦠get a sense if a recruiter may be the type of recruiter or person they can envision making contact and working with,â says Goldman.
